The sun was starting to set, and I figured I had about an hour, maybe a little more before the road was completely swallowed by darkness. 09:42 I was humming along to the song on the radio, my mind already on the parts I had just picked up and the work waiting for me at the shop. when I saw a couple standing by the side of the road up ahead. His wife Diane gave a slight wave from the back seat. 10:48 They seemed pleasant enough and we started chatting as we drove. She looked at me in silence, her fingers still combing through the doll's hair. 29:02 Then without a word she opened the door and got out, clutching the doll tightly to her chest. 29:08 I watched her walk away along the shoulder, in the opposite direction, back the way we had come. 29:14 That made everything even stranger. 29:17 It was as if she had never needed the ride at all. 29:20 I sat there trying to make sense of it. I could barely make out her figure in the rearview mirror. The doll held tightly in her arms, her lips moving again in that same quiet murmur as she spoke to it. 29:33 the scene made the hair on the back of my neck rise against all common sense I rolled down the window and called after her Hey, are you sure you are okay? 29:43 I do not know why I did it. Maybe I was looking for an explanation, something that would make all of this feel less surreal. 29:51 She stopped. 29:52 Slowly, she turned her head to look at me, her face half lit by the red glow of my brake lights. She hugged the doll even tighter, as if protecting it from me. 30:02 She held my gaze with an intensity that was almost disturbing. 30:06 You should not have stopped, she said softly. She says you should never stop. She always knows when it is safe. 30:13 Then she started walking again, continuing down the road until she disappeared into the shadows. 30:20 I did not stay. 30:21 I rolled up the window, locked the doors, and stepped on the gas. 30:25 Even as I drove, I could not get the image of her out of my mind in the mirror.
